Where the crowds are in Birmingham

These are the windows where a banner over Birmingham works hardest: large outdoor crowds, predictable locations, and flight paths that keep your message over the audience for the whole flight.

Attendance figures come from published event, venue, and organizer estimates unless an event note says otherwise. Impressions are modeled exposures for one standard three-hour flight with about two hours over the event, not measured counts; the full methodology is below. Game-day rows reflect the outdoor pre-game crowd only, since the FAA restricts flight over large stadiums during games.

Why aerial works here

Birmingham was built for this

The biggest crowd Birmingham draws all year is not a pro team, it is the Magic City Classic: 69,000 inside Legion Field and an all-day tailgate spread across the west side lots and neighborhood streets around it. Legion Field is the rare urban stadium with nothing tall near it, sitting in an open bowl of parking with Red Mountain to the south, which makes for one of the cleanest banner orbits in the Southeast. Stack that with Barber in Leeds and Talladega an hour up I-20 and the fall calendar gives you three separate outdoor crowds of 65,000 or more inside eight weeks, none of them competing with each other for the same flight date.

Birmingham's crowd calendar runs on college football, motorsports, and a downtown rebuilt around Railroad Park and Protective Stadium, with two major race tracks inside an hour of the city center.

How we estimate this

Each estimate starts from the event's typical attendance, discounted by a dwell factor (the share of attendees on site during a flight window) and a per-lap visibility rate (the share of that crowd with a practical line of sight to the banner). Multiplied by the laps flown in a standard flight (three hours, with about two hours over the event; transit to and from the staging field is not counted), that yields modeled impressions: total exposures, counted the way out-of-home media counts them, where one person seeing the banner on three laps counts three times. Unique reach never exceeds the crowd in view. These are modeled estimates, not measured counts, and we share the full math with every quote.

What that means for CPM

On event days like these, aerial typically models out below high-traffic billboard rates (roughly $5 to $15 CPM) and well below premium programmatic video ($15 to $30 CPM), while putting the message over a live, outdoor, phones-out crowd instead of a feed. And because the banner returns every lap, nearly everyone in view sees it more than once: the odds of someone on site for a full flight never seeing the banner are effectively zero.

Venues & flight context

The Birmingham flight map

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth sits northeast of downtown and its Class C airspace covers the core, so city flights are coordinated with approach every time. Operators stage from Bessemer on the southwest side, which puts Legion Field under ten minutes off the departure end and keeps banner traffic out of the airline flow. Flights work at around 1,000 feet, orbiting the stadium and the tailgate lots. NASCAR Cup weekends at Talladega carry an FAA flight restriction from one hour before the green flag until one hour after the checkered, so race-day flights fly the morning, when the campgrounds and the midway are full and the grandstands are filling.

Proof from the sky

We fly this playbook every season

Aerial view from a Pelican Sky flight over the Jazz Fest crowd at the New Orleans Fair Grounds

Jazz Fest, New Orleans

Stacked orbits directly over the Fair Grounds while attendance peaks. Every lap puts the banner back in front of the same tens of thousands of people, and by the end of the flight virtually everyone on site has seen it.

Parade flyover, Chopin Law Firm

A law firm's banner working a Mardi Gras parade route: high linear crowd density, a captive outdoor audience, and a message no billboard on the route could match for attention.

We hired Pelican Sky to fly our banner over New Orleans and we could not be happier. If you are considering billboards, consider this!

FAQ

Birmingham flight questions, answered

How much does aerial advertising cost in Birmingham?

Pricing is per flight and depends on the event, the flight time, and the banner type. Letter banners cost less than custom printed aerial billboards. Send the event and the date and you get operator availability and a firm quote back fast, with the impression math attached so you can compare it to a billboard buy on the same corridor.

What is the best Birmingham flight of the year?

Magic City Classic Saturday. It is the largest annual HBCU football crowd in the country, it is outdoors for most of the day, and Legion Field has open sightlines on every side. After that: Talladega race mornings, the Barber Vintage Festival in October, and the Regions Tradition in May, which puts a gallery of tens of thousands on an open golf course.

Can you fly over Talladega during the race?

No. The FAA restricts flight near the track from one hour before the green flag until one hour after the race ends. Flights work the morning window instead, which at Talladega is not a consolation. The campground crowd has been on site for days and the grandstands fill hours before the start.

Does the Magic City Classic tailgate count in your numbers?

No, and that is deliberate. We model the 69,000 gate figure only, because that is the number the organizers publish. The tailgate outside Legion Field is genuinely larger than the crowd inside and it is outdoors for the entire flight window, so treat the modeled impressions for that date as a floor rather than a ceiling.

Who actually flies the banner in Birmingham?

Vetted, FAA-certificated banner tow operators from our national network, coordinated by Pelican Sky Banners under one contract, one insurance standard, and one point of contact. You brief us once; we handle the operator, the banner, and the flight plan.

How far in advance should I book a Birmingham flight?

Classic weekend and Talladega race weekends should be booked a month or more out, because they are the two dates every advertiser in the market wants. Ordinary weekends can often be arranged within a few days for letter banners. Custom printed billboards add roughly two weeks of production lead time.
